The story centers on Peter Finch, playing "Smit," and Tony Britton as "Maj. Dillon," who are tasked with smuggling a large quantity of Dutch diamonds into Britain following Germany's invasion of the Netherlands during World War II. The situation is fraught with danger because the German forces want those jewels for themselves and are tightening their grip on them and the people assisting them, including "Anna" portrayed by Eva Bartok. It’s made reasonably well; a feeling of unease permeates everything, as it's never clear who can be relied upon, and Alexander Knox contributes to the film’s interest with his presence in the supporting roles, even if it doesn't completely captivate. The musical score occasionally feels too prominent, and the narrative slows down noticeably after approximately an hour—though it does regain momentum later on. Finch delivers a solid performance, as does Bartok. Tony Britton isn’t known for being a particularly adaptable performer, but he manages adequately to make this unusual wartime film worth seeing.
