CinemaSerf on One Wonderful Sunday

7/10 · Feb 12, 2023

Following WWII, a pair of youngsters—one struggling financially—attempt to enjoy a Sunday together. Yuzo (Isao Numasaki) seems perpetually pessimistic, while his girlfriend Masako (Chieko Nakakita) maintains an optimistic outlook as they discover they only have ¥35 to last them the entire day. This isn't a day for carefree activities; instead, they are set on finding a place where they can live together. Their limited funds lead them into dilapidated and unsanitary parts of their city—areas they wouldn’t normally consider. Various incidents occur: interactions with children playing baseball, damaged pastries, a prospective landlord, an unattainable dream home that appears fragile, and some dancing all contribute to the film's charm, bolstered by compelling performances from the two leads. They argue, reconcile, and part ways; rain falls (a recurring motif in Kurosawa’s work), and Schubert’s music provides a gentle backdrop. Like many genuine relationships, communication is understated, with gestures and unspoken meanings proving particularly impactful as the love story unfolds—sometimes sincerely, sometimes comically. The characters don't undergo significant development, nor does their affection; it remains consistent from beginning to end, which is pleasing in itself. This isn’t a film driven by plot events, but rather an observation of young love attempting to flourish, though lacking sufficient warmth and encouragement.
