It seemed like there could have been space for a thorough examination of what people want and the complicated nature of connections, but instead, the story fell into a fairly standard situation filled with overwrought emotions and characters who felt distant. The individuals involved were presented as being distressed by the ethical issues surrounding their secret relationships, yet they didn't really explore that aspect much at all. Even the romantic feelings seemed artificial, shallow, and unconvincing. A tighter focus on just the central infidelity might have improved things considerably. Looking back, the same criticisms apply to the Korean version too, though those problems were less severe and felt more restrained here.
