It’s disheartening to see Jean Harlow in what turned out to be her final performance. The story centers around a romantic comedy involving a clever bookie and the privileged daughter of a horse breeder. Despite the talented cast's best efforts, the script simply isn't up to their standards. It manages to elicit occasional chuckles, but mostly it’s just a dull movie. There are some unsettling facts connected with this film's history. Jean Harlow passed away about two-thirds of the way through filming and had to be replaced by a stand-in for portions of the remainder. The substitution is noticeable; it’s easy to spot when it isn't actually her on screen. Also, not long after Jean Harlow’s death, Lionel Barrymore fell while stepping over an improperly stowed cable, which resulted in another broken hip and left him needing to use a wheelchair. Although Jean Harlow’s passing helped make the film one of the most profitable releases of that year, it's hard to imagine it would have done nearly as well without her death. The whole situation is rather depressing. It’s frustrating that these performers had to endure so much for something so mediocre! "Say, we got more dead horses on this place than live ones!" ~Grandpa Clayton (Lionel Barrymore)
