Eamonn Andrews hosts this collection of supernatural suspense and a murder mystery. The initial story, "In The Picture," follows an art gallery guide who’s drawn into a disturbing painting by its creator and then becomes subject to the whims of the house's inhabitants. Next, “You Killed Elizabeth” involves two men competing for the affections of one woman; after her death, suspicion falls on either of them—but which one is responsible? The concluding segment, "Lord Mountdrago," depicts a politician who sabotages an opponent’s career and subsequently experiences unsettling dreams where that same man seeks revenge. Anthology films are often uneven in quality, and this one is no exception; the second story feels rather ordinary compared to the others. However, the remaining two segments are quite effective. The opening segment creates a genuinely unsettling atmosphere, almost frightening as it progresses. Once the narrative moves inside the painted house, we encounter three peculiar characters residing within a location that immediately evokes feelings of dread. The dilapidated and noisy setting is amplified by Wendy Toye’s direction, which utilizes tilted camera angles and unique framing. It's an outstanding story featuring Hugh Pryse, Alan Badel, and Eddie Byrne. The final segment benefits significantly from Orson Welles’ commanding performance in a story penned by W. Somerset Maugham. While it doesn’t achieve outright horror, there are genuine humorous moments, and the entire piece maintains a sense of unease; the dream-fueled revenge plot is particularly clever, and the production values are high. It's very good indeed. Alan Badel also appears in this segment, serving as a recurring presence across all three unrelated stories. A wonderful British collection, easily earning an 8/10.
