Wuchak on Nerve

6/10 · May 25, 2025

This unusual film blends drama and comedy while examining social anxiety. The narrative centers on a quiet young man living in Los Angeles who consents to be the focus of a graduate student’s research project. "Nerve," released in 2011, is an independent production crafted entirely by one person, with a remarkably low budget of just $27,500—a detail that's impressive considering how polished it feels. The central male character, portrayed by Tyler Langdon, evokes qualities reminiscent of Emilio Estevez and Chris Evans. Laura Alexandra Ramos delivers a noteworthy performance as the female lead, possessing dark hair and eyes, and she’s the element I found most appealing. The film possesses an eccentric charm and offers understated humor throughout. While it might have escalated with some suspenseful moments, the filmmaker opted to maintain a sense of ordinariness, seemingly believing that restraint is more effective. There are several subtle observations that suggest revisiting it at some point. Its length is 1 hour and 23 minutes, and filming took place in Los Angeles. GRADE: B-
