The film centers on "Emil" (John Williams), a young boy whose money is stolen while he’s en route to his grandmother's house. He becomes wary of the "Man in the Bowler Hat" (George Hayes) and teams up with a group of London street kids to track down the missing funds. It has a strong resemblance to the Children's Film Foundation movies that some British viewers might remember. Primarily intended for children, this adventure allows a group of young actors to enjoy themselves on screen and gives the Saturday morning audience something to get involved with. The audio effects seem out of place, but it’s still a nicely made film featuring a good cast, some straightforward jokes, and Williams and Clare Greet, playing his grandmother, who do a fine job keeping things progressing. It isn't really geared toward adults, but as an example of what entertained audiences nearly one hundred years ago, it's still worth looking at.
