DR BRONNER'S MAGIC SOAPBOX explores the life and beliefs of Emmanuel Bronner (1908-1997), the German émigré who popularized his soap with 1960s counterculture and continues to appeal to people seeking alternatives. Dr. Bronner was known for covering his soap labels with lengthy pronouncements in small type, advocating for human unity through an "all-one-god religion." His story is compelling enough to warrant a film. He departed Germany prior to the Holocaust—his parents died in that tragedy—and later worked as a chemist before being institutionalized at Elgin Asylum. Afterward, he relocated to California and established the well-known soap brand. During the 1940s, he had two sons who were raised in foster care because his spiritual pursuits took precedence over raising children. Jim and Ralph eventually mended their relationship with their father and inherited the business. Filmmaker Sara Lamm has gathered video recordings of Dr. Bronner alongside interviews featuring employees, friends, and everyday consumers of his soap. The film also chronicles Ralph—the company’s current owner—as he travels across the nation sharing anecdotes about his father and promoting Dr. Bronner's Soap. While other interviewees discuss Dr. Bronner’s history of mental illness, Ralph describes him as an unconventional and consistently rebellious individual. Ralph has attempted to mirror his father’s idealism, though not his religious convictions, and some time is devoted to showcasing his charitable work. It’s pleasant to see the head of a company worth millions so willing to assist those he meets, but I think there's too much focus on Ralph’s generosity toward people in public and not enough detail about how the business operates. Ralph briefly mentions that it functions as something like a cooperative, yet we don’t receive many specifics. Despite that minor criticism, I found this film to be quite enjoyable. It certainly provides context for those unusual messages printed on the bottles, prompting reflection on the subtle boundary between debilitating mental illness and an eccentricity that motivates someone to achieve remarkable things.
