Alice Faye puts forth a considerable effort as “Trixie,” who schemes, lies, and obtains loans to participate in the "Powder Puff" air race spanning the United States—the reward is an impressive $100,000! Her primary rival is the affluent “Gerry” (referred to as "Gary," played by Constance Bennett). What follows is a fairly formulaic competition story interspersed with a rather sad song performed by Faye and some genuinely well-done shots of planes in flight. The movie itself isn't particularly noteworthy. The script lacks originality, and much of the studio filming using rear projection simply appears low quality. Joan Davis ("Babe") brings an energetic presence, adding moments of humor, but generally this is a rather disheartening version of what could have been a more thrilling film. Charles Farrell, a captivating silent era star (“Street Angel” (1928) and “City Girl” (1930) being examples of his better work), makes occasional appearances, which does improve things somewhat, but not enough to make it truly successful. It’s something you could pass the time with, but unlikely to stick in your memory.
