Kru, his wife Chantui, and their three children lead a simple existence in this silent film, which unfolds within the remote Siamese forest. They attempt to live peacefully with their surroundings—provided they protect their livestock with sturdy coral enclosures and construct their home on stilts, relying on coconut milk and freshly milled rice for sustenance. However, a leopard quickly overcomes these defenses, prompting Kru to devise a plan to trap it before it destroys his animals and potentially endangers his family. He continues working the land alongside a water buffalo while their pet monkey raids the food stores and Chantui crafts baskets. Securing the animals at night becomes an elaborate undertaking, seemingly more complicated than building Noah's Ark, with the hope of keeping them safe. The following morning brings further trouble: the buffalo has wandered off and encountered a tiger! As for the leopard, will it fall into Kru’s trap? Recognizing that he cannot manage this alone, Kru journeys to the nearby village to seek assistance in constructing more elaborate traps and tracking down the predator. He employs pits, nets, and razor-sharp bamboo spikes. A confrontation ensues as humans pursue animals, and animals hunt humans. There's a genuine quality to this film. Beyond some precarious nature photography, it demonstrates how human ingenuity and tools often prove superior to the natural instincts of wild creatures, who are easily subdued by ropes and bullets—until an elephant herd appears, proving that even firearms cannot deter everything, forcing the villagers to use camouflage and stealth to control the destructive animals. Certain moments are genuinely thrilling, leading up to a dangerous and chaotic ending that I found ultimately disappointing. A diverse range of wildlife is showcased, making it worthwhile for its depiction of how nature functions when humans are integrated into its ecosystem—a reminder that "brain outweighs brawn," sometimes to our detriment.
