Viewers familiar with Jeremy Brett’s portrayal of "Holmes" will likely notice parallels with Arthur Wontner’s thoughtful and intellectual approach. The detective and his companion, “Dr. Watson” (Ian Fleming), collaborate with Scotland Yard Inspector "Lestrade" (John Turnbull) to examine a puzzling death at the residence of Sir Henry Baskerville. They quickly become involved in an old tale that evokes a feeling of unease alongside the baffling vanishing of the racehorse "Silver Blaze," which occurred shortly before its important competition. While the production feels somewhat constrained by the stage, the narrative is sound and the actors effectively contribute to building and maintaining an atmosphere of mystery within this well-known “Sherlock Holmes” story combined with a separate puzzle. Running just over an hour, it isn't difficult for the audience to figure out who committed the crime—the performers don’t provide much opportunity for speculation—but I still considered it a fairly enjoyable film and found its pacing agreeable.
