Tyrone Power makes a striking appearance in this excellent adventure film. Taking place during the time of the Borgia popes, the story centers on an eager young man—initially portrayed as naive—who resolves to improve his standing by adopting the false name "Andrea Orsini" and going to work for Cesare Borgia (Orson Welles). Borgia’s goal is to take control of and unify the various free states in Italy. During one assignment, he finds himself drawn to “Camilla Verano” (Wanda Hendrix), who happens to be married to “Count Marc” (Felix Aylmer), a man considerably older but possessing admirable integrity for his era. When Borgia begins to exert pressure on Count Marc, "Orsini" risks everything and changes allegiance. Welles appears relatively infrequently, yet he’s quite believable as someone you wouldn't want to provoke, and unsurprisingly, he won’t accept any disloyalty from a former employee. The acting is solid across the board, and so is the script itself. The romantic storyline doesn't overly interfere with the action sequences, and there are numerous sieges and sword fights filmed on location that help maintain a brisk pace.
