John Chard on Carnival Story

5/10 · Jul 26, 2014

Kurt Neumann’s Carnival Story features Anne Baxter, Steve Cochran, Lyle Bettger, George Nader and Jay C. Flippen, with a musical score by Willy Schmidt-Gentner and cinematography by Ernest Haller. The story unfolds in Munich, Germany, focusing on the operations of Grayson's traveling carnival. Romantic complications, intense feelings, and dangerous high diving routines collide. Shot using Agfacolor/Technicolor, Carnival Story is generally agreeable to watch and listen to—though it takes some getting used to Baxter’s German accent! Willi (Baxter) becomes a key figure in the events, initially caught stealing from carnival worker Joe Hammond (Cochran), before being hired by owner Charley Grayson (Flippen). From that point on, she begins to advance within the carnival hierarchy while also becoming involved in a passionate love triangle with both Joe and Frank Collini (Bettger). The film’s emotional intensity never rises above mildness; the plot suffers from repetition that becomes noticeable as it progresses. There's plenty of sighing and sexual tension, but the screen doesn't truly heat up, despite Cochran’s undeniable charisma and Baxter’s inherent sensuality. Flippen feels underutilized, and Bettger seems miscast in the role of a high diver sporting swim trunks. The storytelling itself lacks excitement; even the conclusion fails to deliver a sense of thrilling resolution. It felt like a chance that wasn't fully realized, but those who enjoy seeing Steve Cochran play a rebellious character will find it worthwhile, as will anyone with an appreciation for Annie Baxter’s appeal. 5/10
