Lang Tong’s new movie is a disturbing but imperfect suspense film, drawing influence from movies like Audition and Dumplings, and beginning with a disquieting sequence involving soup preparation that establishes an atmosphere of tension. The central concept—a man entangled in a dangerous romantic relationship—holds promise and delivers some surprises, however, issues with the narrative’s progression, inconsistencies in the plot, and scenes focusing on sexuality that feel excessive detract from its overall effect. Uninspired performances by the cast and low-quality visuals also contribute to the film's shortcomings, culminating in a resolution that seems rushed and not fully realized.
