Peter McGinn on Anne of Green Gables

5/10 · Sep 2, 2021

It’s difficult to give an unbiased assessment of this film, especially knowing there are later adaptations that have been made. The story itself seems to hold up well over time, and the actors involved do a decent job given the limited number of performers. On its own merits, it's not terrible. However, the versions starring Meagan Follows and the Canadian production from the 1980s are so prominent that this film struggles to distinguish itself. I’m unsure if the very brief length of 78 minutes was a factor, or simply an attempt to streamline the plot, but merging the roles of Rachel Lynde and Diana Berry felt like a mistake. These characters had distinct personalities and each played unique parts in the narrative, so combining them diminished some of its substance. The conclusion felt hurried, as if someone had sped up the playback. Adaptations almost always make alterations, which I usually don’t mind; this time, though, it didn't work for me.
