Barbara Stanwyck portrays "Stella," a woman from a modest background who resolves to better her circumstances by marrying the wealthier "Stephen Dallas" (played by John Boles), with whom she soon has a daughter named "Laurel" (Anne Shirley). It isn't long before their marriage falls apart, and “Laurel” becomes the central point of Stanwyck’s focus. She spares no expense in ensuring her daughter’s well-being, but eventually comes to understand – sometimes through difficult methods – that she might be hindering Laurel's chance at happiness; especially when Stephen finds a new relationship with a family that Laurel grows fond of. The actors handle the themes of aspiration, dedication, social climbing, and emotional mistreatment effectively, and Stanwyck delivers a skilled and genuine performance in her central role. Alan Hale also makes a positive impression as the friendly gambler, contributing to this ultimately heartwarming narrative.
