This version of the H. Rider Haggard tale feels like classic boy’s-own fiction. Initially, Sir Cedric Hardwicke’s portrayal of Allan Quartermain seems a bit awkward, but he settles into the role quickly. He joins John Loder and Anna Lee on a quest to locate her father, who ventured deep into Africa in pursuit of King Solomon's fabled treasure. During their journey, they meet Umbopa (Paul Robeson), an exile, who assists them. It’s evident that a considerable budget was allocated for this film; the direction by Robert Stevenson is smooth and engaging, and there's even a musical number included. While it contains attitudes toward colonialism that are difficult to accept today, impressive visuals and a thrilling conclusion contribute to its enduring appeal as an adventure movie.
