Adolphe Menjou portrays “Oliver Merlin,” who chooses "Hazel Dawes" (Andrea Leeds) as his guide to understanding contemporary tastes—essentially, someone to keep him connected with everyday people. The concept itself seemed promising, but he doesn’t truly concur with her assessments and struggles to put her insights into practice, which results in a rather disorganized movie experience. There's comedy, opera – Vera Zorina is a bright spot – ballet, ventriloquism, dancing; it attempts to include everything imaginable, though much of the material isn't particularly impressive. It brought to mind those old-fashioned Vaudeville shows that aimed to offer something for everyone, and while each act gets its moment in the spotlight, most of what follows is uninteresting. A significant detail is that this was the last creative work from George Gershwin, who added "Love Walked In" and "Love is Here to Stay” in an attempt to rescue something worthwhile from this meandering production. It’s pleasant, visually appealing, and generally upbeat, but it overreaches in its attempts to cater to every taste and frequently doesn't quite succeed. Also, the film runs on far too long.
