It’s fascinating to spend ten minutes observing this, and you might find yourself noticing hedges in a new way during your next countryside stroll. Their height and thickness both play a role: if they're too short and thick, sunlight can’t reach through; if they’re overly tall, the lower sections become sparse, which defeats their purpose. There’s something almost artistic about watching the person tending to the hedge – along with their helper – as they trim, shape, and intertwine the branches, clearing away dead growth and thorny bushes. By the end, after the hazel or willow is used for binding, it appears completely organic and should provide a barrier, keeping things in and out, for two decades; the thorns are more useful than any barbed wire could be. The narration is somewhat straightforward and factual, but I'm left wondering if we’re witnessing the last of this kind of skill.
