Wuchak on Vengeance Valley

7/10 · Aug 26, 2019

This is a genuine Western with Burt Lancaster. A man raised as a brother (Burt Lancaster) working on a ranch in Northwestern Colorado finds himself wrongly accused of fathering a child with a woman (Sally Forrest). The true culprits are her two rough brothers, played by Hugh O’Brian and John Ireland, though the situation is complicated by a shadowy natural brother (Robert Walker). Joanne Dru appears as the wife of Robert Walker's character, but seems drawn to Lancaster’s. As described in the promotional material, “Vengeance Valley” (1951) blends elements of a melodrama with those of a traditional Western, while still including familiar scenes like beautiful Colorado landscapes, barroom brawls, fistfights, shootouts, steam trains, horse breaking, cattle theft, and cattle drives. The film includes an unusual narration from one of the ranch hands, Hewie (Carleton Carpenter), which provides important details about what happens with the cattle during Winter, Spring round-ups, cattle drives, and sales. At just over an hour long—specifically, 1 hour, 23 minutes—the movie doesn’t feel too lengthy, and it was filmed in Coal Creek & Oak Creek in Northwestern Colorado. GRADE: B
