The music of John Philip Sousa is familiar territory for those with experience in organizations like the Boy's Brigade or Scouts, thanks to his extensive collection of marching pieces that garnered him international recognition. It’s fortunate that we have this body of work, but unfortunately, this film doesn't do it justice. While Clifton Webb throws himself into his part and a youthful Robert Wagner adds some charm as his eager tuba student, the rest of the production is rather disappointing. Webb spends much of the movie acting like a mechanical toy soldier from a Brothers’ Grimm story, delivering lines in a very precise way. Finlay Currie's imitation of Colonel Sanders does elicit a chuckle, but mostly director Henry Koster has simply assembled a visually bright, yet overly staged presentation of Sousa’s music, failing to offer much substance. There were undoubtedly battles fought and his compositions likely provided encouragement for those in danger; the impact of war clearly touched him deeply. However, there's little attempt to flesh out the other characters, leaving everything feeling rather shallow – even frivolous. Nevertheless, it should be entertaining if you appreciate a bit of showmanship and quality band music.
