Wuchak on Gun Fury

7/10 · Jan 3, 2022

“Gun Fury” features Rock Hudson and Donna Reed as a couple making their way to California in the Southwest. The story begins with their stagecoach being robbed, and Ben Warren (Hudson) is presumed dead, before he sets out to pursue the criminals who have his fiancée. Filmed primarily outdoors in the Sedona, Arizona area, this Western offers some striking scenery. While it starts at a measured pace, it evolves into an action-packed chase film. The performances are strong; Hudson is excellent and Leo Gordon delivers as Jess, the former gang member whom Ben begins to befriend. However, Phil Carey truly stands out in the role of Frank Slayton, a bitter ex-Confederate who seems unable to let go of the past. The conflict between Slayton and Jess proves compelling; Jess expresses concern that Slayton’s actions as an outlaw have gone too far. Although Slayton dismisses this criticism, it's evident he views Jess as someone valuable – a partner he could eliminate without hesitation if needed. Carey embodies a sinister version of Charlton Heston. His character rationalizes his crimes by claiming he is still fighting a war, despite the Civil War having ended long ago. He desires Jennifer (Reed) because she represents a Southern Belle and reminds him of a lost world that was shattered by the conflict. Despite its merits, the script has noticeable flaws. One outlaw states Warren is dead following the stagecoach robbery, but he later recovers with no explanation for his injuries; he briefly touches his head when regaining consciousness, suggesting he may have been grazed by a bullet. The final plot twist feels particularly contrived. Nevertheless, if you’re willing to disregard these shortcomings, “Gun Fury” remains an enjoyable Western from the 1950s due to its numerous strengths. The film is concise, running just 83 minutes.
