The dynamic between Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh has often been portrayed as strained, though it’s questionable whether their interactions were ever this elaborate. It's an acceptable-looking dramatic production featuring Bette Davis and Richard Todd, seemingly intent on bolstering England’s image—and their own fortunes—with Joan Collins in the role of the predictably “pathetic” lady-in-waiting who develops feelings for Raleigh, which consequently provokes the queen’s displeasure. Herbert Marshall makes a commendable effort to add some substance to the story, and Dan O'Herlihy contributes occasional moments of levity; however, what remains is a vibrant but ultimately unremarkable historical drama filled with dialogue, punctuated by infrequent glimpses of Davis’s talent.
