It’s remarkable how a person can change after taking another life. Marshal Calem Ware, portrayed by Randolph Scott, feels worn out by Medicine Bend, weary of violence and the constant threat from those who would do him harm. He carries emotional burdens from his history as well. When old conflicts reappear and someone attempts to end his existence once more, Calem anticipates what he hopes will be a final confrontation. This film is presented by the Scott/Brown production company and was directed by Joseph H. Lewis, based on a Brad Ward story (Marshal of Medicine Bend), with a screenplay adaptation by Kenneth Gamet. Ray Rennahan handled the cinematography, filmed at French Ranch – Hidden Valley Road in Thousand Oaks, California. The cast includes Angela Lansbury, Warner Anderson, Jean Parker, and Wallace Ford alongside Scott. “A Lawless Street” preceded Scott’s collaboration with Budd Boetticher in “Seven Men From Now,” which marked the beginning of a series of mature Western films that highlighted both Scott's talent and the best aspects of 1950s Westerns. Consequently, it isn’t unexpected to find that this film doesn’t quite reach the level of those Boetticher/Scott productions. It seems Scott isn't just playing a role; he appears genuinely exhausted, contributing to the overall sense of weariness. The film has generated varied opinions among fans of Westerns, partly because the plot is familiar territory already explored in other, more significant films within the genre. The script also lacks energy and excitement, and Scott’s fellow actors are largely unremarkable. The conclusion feels anticlimactic and drawn out at length. However, the initial portion of the film prevents it from being a complete failure; Lewis' camerawork is graceful, and those who enjoy fight scenes will find plenty to appreciate. We also get a pleasant musical interlude featuring Lansbury’s singing. Ultimately, this feels like a movie with two distinct sections that don't quite coalesce into something truly satisfying. Like Switzerland, I remain neutral about it; I’m assigning a 5/10 rating, but with the understanding that I have an open admiration for Scott and Lewis' work.
