If we were as familiar with Portuguese cinema as we are with others, perhaps "1.ª Vez 16mm" would be our cult film: the Portuguese equivalent of *The Room*, and even more captivating than Tommy Wiseau's work. Everything went so wrong that in some places it was considered experimental. But that’s not quite right; amidst all the strangeness, you have to appreciate the bizarre symbolism scattered throughout, the deeply depressing way the director handles the pseudo-autobiographical story he intended to tell, and the awkward moments of self-criticism, where the author mocks/canonizes – it's up to the viewer – his production methods, which involve sending letters to any company willing to pay a few euros to appear for a few seconds of film (we see him going to the post office to send these requests), not paying the technical crew, and living off shoots dominated by constant..."improvisation." And there's so much more in this hilarious film specimen (be careful not to choke), extraordinarily badly made (there’s nothing redeemable about it), and one of the most unsettling experiences I’ve ever had. Get ready for a festival of accidental nonsense, (don’t look for answers anywhere on this tape), one of those accidents that's enjoyable from beginning to end.
