Carol Reed’s captivating story echoes “The Lady Vanishes,” centering on an elaborate scheme to retrieve a prominent Czech scientist from Nazi control. He had previously been brought safely to Britain, only to be abducted right under the watch of British intelligence, necessitating a rescue operation. Rex Harrison takes on the role of leading this effort, assuming multiple personas throughout the film, and he's supported by the scientist’s daughter, Margaret Lockwood, while being shadowed by Paul Henreid as the deceptive "Marsen." The action itself doesn't offer anything groundbreaking; I found myself anticipating Harrison to lapse into his King Mongkut persona—his portrayal of a Nazi felt rather unbelievable. However, Radford and Wayne, playing “Charters & Caldicott,” truly stood out for me. They were given considerably more screen time than typical, and through humor and clumsy behavior, they seemed to embody the attitude of the British elite during the period leading up to the late 1930s Nazi invasions—a perspective that perhaps only Churchill foresaw. To be frank, this film lacks genuine suspense, but it’s a commendable collaborative project with some pleasant Haydn music.
