I decided to watch 1:54 not long ago, and it held my attention completely throughout its runtime. Even though I needed subtitles the whole time because it’s a foreign film, I still got drawn into what was happening. The movie centers on a young boy who goes through some incredibly difficult experiences, beginning with the death of a friend by suicide. Seeing something like that has a real impact on him, and his search for comfort is deeply moving and touching. As he starts to experience happiness with someone new, everything falls apart because of a horrible instance of cyberbullying. A private moment he had with his friend is recorded and shared online, which causes many upsetting things to happen, including a serious car accident and time spent in the hospital. It seems like things might get better for a little while, but then another sad event leads to an unthinkable loss. The film highlights how severe cyberbullying can be and what damage it does. Seeing this young man’s struggle and his final choice to end his own life really emphasizes the cruelty that's out there. It’s shocking to think that something so unimportant could result in such a sad ending, and it makes me very upset. 1:54 is an impactful and emotional film that serves as a sad reminder of how important being nice and caring for others is when the world can be unkind.
