An archaeologist portrayed by Casper Van Dien unearths the remains of a massive being within Southern California’s deserts, drawing the attention of an enigmatic man—Navid Negahban—who harbors sinister intentions regarding the gigantic mummy. Robert Wagner appears as an entrepreneur, and Geoffrey Lewis is part of the team. "The Fallen Ones” (2005) delivers desert adventure/horror with a television-style budget. It brings to mind films like “The Mummy” (1999), "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and even aspects of "Jurassic Park." However, it doesn't quite reach their level. The film’s settings are impressive, the musical score is appropriate, Van Dien performs well in his leading role, there’s some amusing dialogue, and both the mechanical giant and the mummy-giant are effectively realized. The movie’s strongest elements involve its exploration of the Nephilim and malevolent spirits—born from unions with women as described in Genesis 6—and the subsequent flood. Wagner likely had a brief appearance, perhaps only for a few days, but he was convincing given his age of 74 during filming. The movie’s quality is lessened by some low-quality computer-generated imagery, which isn't surprising considering it's a TV production from 2004. Kristen Miller is charming, though her role is too small and she seems like someone who could enjoy a fast food meal. The writer/director demonstrated significant growth in later work, such as “Alpha Wolf” (2018), which also stars Van Dien. The film’s length is 1 hour and 29 minutes. It was filmed in Trona, Southern California—a three-hour drive northeast of Los Angeles, near Death Valley National Park. GRADE: C+
