Cliff Robertson stars in what feels like an oddly unnecessary wartime story. He portrays "Sgt. Baxter," who frees a French village following D-Day, then journeys with "Pte. Devine" (Red Buttons) throughout the rest of the movie, transporting 21 civilians and receiving conflicting orders from their commanding officer at each stop. During this time, he also finds moments for a brief romantic connection with "Lili" (Irina Demick), but remains wary because Nazis – including his intelligent prisoner Commandant (Marius Goring) – are still active. The events they experience aren't without sadness, and the film conveys a feeling of wartime devastation as structures are destroyed, their group is attacked from above, and they must find places to rest while gathering food. Filming on location lends a certain realism to what’s happening onscreen, and the script occasionally has some clever lines. Maybe it’s offering a darkly humorous perspective on how pointless war can be? It's an unusual approach to this type of film.
