This movie combines elements of Friday the 13th and Bring It On. A cheerleading team from near Houston heads to summer camp hoping to strengthen their teamwork and improve their routines, but a masked killer begins picking them off. "Spirit Camp" (2009) is a comedic blend of those two films. Though it’s an independently produced project, director and writer Kerry Beyer demonstrates skill in the filmmaking, resulting in professional-looking visuals with good locations, lighting, cinematography, gore effects, sound design, and music. Even the relatively unknown actors deliver performances that are intentionally over-the-top and entertaining, although a few scenes feature some questionable acting choices. Beyer incorporates all the expected elements of a slasher film, and she’s clearly adept at filming women. Katy Rowe (as Amber), Denise Williamson (as Monica), Amy Morris (as Lindsay), Julin (as Rachel), and Sarah McCulley/Thygeson (as Beth) are particularly noteworthy in their roles. I initially worried that the humorous tone might prevent the plot from staying interesting throughout its length—it feels a bit long for an independent slasher film—but Beyer manages to maintain momentum, and I ended up becoming invested in what was happening. It was also nice that I couldn’t guess who the killer would be. On the other hand, some of the humor felt excessive, but it wasn't as bad as something like "American Pie," and it seemed clear that the filmmakers were trying to be funny. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 36 minutes and was filmed in Cleveland, Texas (about two and a half hours south of Lake Tyler), with the suburban scenes shot in Houston. GRADE: B/B-
