John Chard on Trouble Along the Way

8/10 · Jan 23, 2017

She’s got great legs too! Michael Curtiz is responsible for directing Trouble Along the Way, which was written by Melville Shavelson, Jack Rose, Douglas Morrow and Robert Hardy Andrews. The film features John Wayne, Donna Reed, Charles Coburn, Tom Tully, Sherry Jackson, Marie Windsor, Tom Helmore, Dabbs Greer and Leif Erickson. Max Steiner composed the music and Archie Stout handled the cinematography. A small college with religious affiliations is in danger of shutting down, so they ask a former football coach, Steve Williams (Wayne), to try and turn around their losing team. He’s also dealing with a custody dispute over his young daughter, which is why he takes on the job. Will he be able to succeed? He employs some unusual strategies both on and off the field in an attempt to do so. Beyond being a feel-good movie, Trouble Along the Way explores several themes. It offers thoughtful insights into single parenting, with Wayne’s character demonstrating a unique way of interacting with his charming daughter. The film also examines the function of a football coach, revealing how sports can be used for educational purposes. Religious elements are present as well; while they occasionally feel somewhat overstated, they contribute to an interesting underlying theme. But ultimately, what we're looking for is joy, energy, humor and affection, and this movie delivers those things in abundance. The acting is very good, and Wayne has a wonderful rapport with both Reed and young Jackson. The writing is clever and amusing; the courtroom scenes are particularly funny, and the film follows a predictable but satisfying path. It’s an enjoyable combination of comedy, romance and drama that avoids becoming overly sentimental thanks to its humor, smartness and warmth. 7/10
