CinemaSerf on Dawn of the Mummy

After enduring five hours of Steven Soderbergh's "Che," I was hoping for something a bit more entertaining. Perhaps not *this* entertaining, though. The film centers on a group of women and their photographer while they’re shooting in the Egyptian desert, where they stumble upon an ancient tomb. Hoping to find riches, they instead uncover difficulties when disturbing the site stirs up creatures that haven't eaten since King Tut was just a boy. The initial ten minutes and final ten minutes offer some excitement; otherwise, it's a regrettable use of videotape, as director Frank Agrama seems to believe that women’s screams and inadequate lighting are sufficient to create suspense. I actually felt bad for the mummies—they surely deserved something more substantial after their long sleep. George Peck is memorable in his role as "Rick"—his performance is unlike anything you see regularly, and it's worth appreciating for what it is: awful. It wouldn’t be right to blame him alone, because everyone involved is equally poor, and I can’t suggest seeing this film—even if you share my fondness for the genre. Boris Karloff or Christopher Lee don’t need to concern themselves with this one.
