Some films present challenges when attempting to appreciate them despite their shortcomings. I found it difficult to focus on what was being said, which is a significant issue, especially given that movies today generally aren’t silent. While I understand the cast members were German and speaking another language, I don't believe that should be the audience’s responsibility. It’s baffling why we should pay for something like that and have to endure those very distracting accents. American actor Christopher Kriesa, portraying Dr. Douglas Madsen, was possibly the only character who seemed acceptable or at least passable. The rest of the performers were rather disappointing, particularly due to their use of a fabricated and ridiculous imitation of an old-fashioned English dialect, spoken by a group of odd individuals living in a woodland cottage. It’s possible this supposed archaic form of English served as a disguise for the fact that the actors weren't native English speakers, but even so, the outcome was quite poor. As for the story itself, I'm unsure if it is simply underwhelming or something worse, perhaps it is, but that isn't nearly as problematic as the fact that the same sequence of events happens twice. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true. The identical storyline plays out again in each half of the movie, only with different characters, although Dr. Douglas Madsen appears in both instances. It seems like the writers were struggling to fill ninety minutes and ran short on ideas after completing the first portion of the script. There's something amusing about that, actually. It’s similar to watching a new horror film followed by a quick remake or something along those lines. I dislike being overly critical in my reviews, because no matter how much I might like or dislike a movie, there is always some degree of effort involved from the director, the actors, and everyone who worked on it. Perhaps "Chain Reaction" could be valued for its minor aspects, such as the straightforward displays of gore that avoid cheap computer-generated effects in favor of latex and breakfast cereal. I didn't particularly enjoy the film, but I’m certain those who appreciate graphic violence will likely find it tolerable overall.
