Michael Rennie portrays Slim Callaghan, a private investigator who has a tendency to resolve cases in ways that frustrate both law enforcement and those he investigates. His curiosity is sparked when a potential client dies shortly after a woman slips something into his drink at a nightclub. Despite objections from one of the deceased’s daughters, Callaghan goes to their house to look into things. Faith Brook, Moira Lister, and Patricia Goddard portray the sisters, who seem intent on influencing their father's will, and it appears that one or more of them may be working with Nigel Patrick, playing Lucien. The plot feels overstuffed; there are numerous storylines that don’t get explored in any depth, and Nigel Patrick doesn’t quite live up to expectations. There were moments when the storytelling felt like listening to a radio drama with visuals because it contains so much dialogue and not a lot of action until the very end, when some of the deceptive elements become apparent. The basic story is decent, but the film's heavy-handed presentation makes it difficult to stay interested.
