John Chard on See No Evil

8/10 · Mar 15, 2020

Richard Fleischer’s film, a woman-in-peril story that deserves far more recognition, is titled See No Evil (also known as Blind Terror). The movie was directed by Fleischer and written by Brian Clemens, featuring Mia Farrow, Dorothy Alison, Robin Bailey, Diane Grayson, Brian Rawlinson, Norman Eshley, and Paul Nicholas. Elmer Bernstein composed the music, and Gerry Fisher handled the cinematography. After losing her sight in a riding accident, Sarah Rexton (Farrow) goes to live with her uncle’s family in the countryside. What begins as an adjustment period quickly turns into a terrifying ordeal when a murderer starts targeting the family—and Sarah doesn't realize there’s a killer among them. The film was unsuccessful when it came out in 1971 and then faded from view for quite some time. Perhaps audiences and critics were too quick to compare it unfavorably with the excellent, comparable Audrey Hepburn movie "Wait Until Dark," released three years prior; I think this one warrants a fresh look. It’s a genuinely tense thriller, the sort of thing we don't often see done so effectively anymore. Farrow delivers a wonderful performance, committing fully to her role as Fleischer really puts her through some difficult moments. The killer remains unseen until the final third of the movie, and is only ever shown by his cowboy boots—which adds an element of mystery. While there isn't much gore, we see the consequences of the murders. When Sarah is attacked and has to fight for survival within her dark new reality, it’s more disturbing than most of the graphic violence that’s common today. With Bernstein’s excellent score and Fleischer (a director with a wide range of experience) using his considerable skills, it's simple to overlook any plot holes and simply enjoy the excitement. It earns a rating of 7.5/10.
