Paleface 3? Not exactly, but it's a pleasant Hope film nonetheless. Insurance salesman Milford Farnsworth, a bit of a klutz, sells outlaw Jesse James a $100,000 policy. When his employer discovers who the client is, he sends Farnsworth after James to retrieve the policy, with the firm instruction that James must not be hurt. The premise—Bob Hope selling Jesse James an insurance policy!—is enough to give you an idea of what kind of movie this is. There's nothing particularly new here compared to other films starring Hope, and as a big fan of "The Paleface" and its even stronger sequel, "Son Of Paleface," I’d suggest those if you want something better. Still, “Alias” has some good parts that lift it above the average, and for visual gags alone, this film does better than many of Hope's more famous comedies. Whether it's a hat soaked in alcohol or a horse wearing a fedora after eating magic mushrooms, there’s still plenty of amusement to be found as Hope sticks with his successful approach. Rhonda Fleming is along for the journey as Cora Lee Collins, Jesse James’ girlfriend, and Wendell Corey portrays James himself, seeming to have a good time. The film's final section has become something of a talking point because it features a lengthy shootout where you can try to spot familiar faces—Gary Cooper, Roy Rogers, Gail Davis, and Bing Crosby all appear to bring the movie to a strong conclusion. 6.5/10
