It's straightforward to follow, even though it might seem strange at first glance—Kong is male, and Miss Watson... well, you’ll have to see that for yourselves. Ishirô Honda directed King Kong Escapes, with a script by Takeshi Kimura. The film features Rhodes Reason, Mie Hama, Linda Miller, Akira Takarada, and Hideyo Amamoto, accompanied by music from Akira Ifukube and cinematography by Hajime Koizumi. The original Japanese title for King Kong Escapes was King Kong's Counterattack, and it served as a live-action adaptation connected to the 1966 animated series simply known as King Kong (or The King Kong Show). Understanding this really prepares you for what’s coming in King Kong Escapes, because essentially, it's a live-action cartoon! The plot is exactly what you’d imagine—very silly. There's an evil genius with a mechanical robot King Kong, an Asian woman determined to increase her nuclear capabilities for global control, a UN submarine crew including a pretty lady meant to soften the real Kong’s heart, and of course, some monster fights. The special effects are uneven but enjoyable if you go along with it; however, Kong looks too goofy to be threatening—he seems like he's been smoking something! There's an entertaining fight with Gorosauras, a dinosaur that attacks by repeatedly drop-kicking its opponent with both feet. It all leads up to the expected climactic showdown as the two Kongs battle it out. Who comes out on top? Will Tokyo be destroyed? You might not truly care about the outcome, but you’ll likely have fun watching how things unfold. The characters are delightfully cheesy, especially the villainous Dr. Who (Amamoto), who wears a black cape and has dramatically arched eyebrows. He establishes the tone early on, with a mischievous look as he helps the alluring Madame X (Hama) carry out her wild science fiction plans. Rhodes Reason embodies American heroism, while Takarada represents the Japanese side, and Miller (terribly dubbed) wanders around looking attractive and keeping Kong under control. Wonderful! 5/10
