United Global Media Entertainment on King Liar

9.5/10 · Apr 4, 2016

The first major release of April in Malayalam cinema arrived today, and it’s certainly an event. It's King Liar, featuring popular actor Dileep alongside Madonna Sebastian, who gained recognition from the Premam movie. A significant aspect generating excitement was the reunion of Siddique and Lal after 22 years, a pairing made even more notable by the involvement of Dileep. Siddique wrote the screenplay for this film, while Lal directed it. Bipin Chandran penned the dialogues. Ouseppachan Valakkuzhy, who produced the first film from the Siddique-Lal team, also served as producer, playing an important role in making their reunion possible. The story primarily focuses on the characters portrayed by Dileep and Madonna Sebastian. Dileep plays Sathya Narayanan, and Madonna portrays Anjali. The narrative begins with a problem within the Anand Varma family, wealthy business owners based in Dubai. Lal takes on the role of Anand Varma, while Asha Sharath plays his wife, Anitha Varma. The story then shifts to Sathya Narayan’s life, where he earns a living through deception and fraud—activities like creating fake certificates with his assistant Antappan, played by Balu Varghese. Sathya Narayanan falls for a woman named Anjali but introduces himself as “Naran,” pretending to be a successful businessman to win her affection. Later, when she discovers his lie, she attempts to distance herself from him, and the film follows his efforts to regain her trust with the unexpected assistance of Anand Varma, who enters his life and proposes an agreement. Initially, it’s important to discuss Lal's direction; he clearly succeeded in creating a complete entertainer for both family audiences and younger viewers. However, the film doesn't quite reach the standard one would anticipate from Siddique and Lal. The screenplay by Siddique and Lal is respectable, featuring good comedy and emotional moments. They truly showcased their abilities during the first half of the movie, which was genuinely hilarious. But in the second half, there’s a sense that something is missing, failing to deliver the complete satisfaction typically associated with Siddique-Lal films. Bipin Chandran's dialogues were acceptable but often lacked impact and felt contrived toward the conclusion. The film's strength lies primarily in the performances. Dileep once again shines onscreen, giving his all to make Sathya Narayanan a dynamic character. His appearance, expressions, and dialogue delivery were excellent as usual, demonstrating his ability to elevate even mediocre jokes through sheer acting skill. He essentially carried the film forward almost entirely until the end. Balu Varghese was a standout performer; his strong support for Dileep proved another highlight. Supporting actors such as Asha Sharath, Kanaran Harish, Lal, Natasha Suri, and Joy Mathew all delivered acceptable performances. Madonna Sebastian, in her role as the female lead, did well, though a noticeable drawback was the heavy makeup she wore, which detracted from her character and occasionally made her performance seem unconvincing. The natural charm she displayed in Premam seemed diminished. However, she didn't disappoint as an actress overall. Alby’s cinematography was good, effectively capturing Dubai’s beauty. Alex Paul’s songs and Deepak Dev’s background score were enjoyable, though not exceptional. Overall, King Liar is a fun movie that includes everything you would expect in a Dileep film. The popular actor did his best to entertain, and viewers won't be disappointed. The Siddique and Lal collaboration produced better results compared to their more recent individual projects; this one surpasses those films. So, it’s worth watching during your vacation time with family.
