This film isn't a lighthearted teen comedy along the lines of Molly Ringwald’s movies from the mid-80s. Instead, it presents itself as a more serious drama featuring young actors examining romantic relationships and their consequences for those involved. It shares some similarities with "Less Than Zero," since Andrew McCarthy is in both, but this one avoids that earlier film's pervasive sense of despair related to drug use. The story centers on the genuine connection between two individuals who may lack the experience needed to navigate a powerful attraction. As events unfold, we witness Matt Larkin’s shortcomings and Jewel’s as well. It raises the question: do these personal failings invalidate their feelings for each other? Beyond the beautiful settings and the autumn/winter atmosphere, moments of genuine quality emerge—like Jewel's secluded spot where she finds solitude, Jean’s revealing observations to Molly about her relationship with Matt, Sproles’ undeniable charm (played by Doug Hutchison), and Matt's unexpected encounter with Green (Viggo Mortensen). It’s also noteworthy seeing a very young Ben Stiller; he was just 22 during filming. You’ll probably recognize several actors, such as Marita Geraghty as Maureen, who later appeared as Margaret on Seinfeld six years afterward. I never found Molly particularly captivating in her earlier roles, but she seems to have truly matured and become quite lovely by this point. The film has a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes and was filmed from November 1987 to January 1988 in the Cincinnati area of Ohio (including Kings Island and Monroe), across the river in Kentucky (Boone County and Campbell County), and in Switzerland County, Indiana.
