I’ve liked the “Charlie Chan” films starring Sidney Toler, and this one stands out as being among the stronger entries. Charlie and his somewhat clumsy adopted son, Jimmy (Victor Sen Yung), journey to San Francisco to help local police with an unusual murder case. There's another concern too: a missing woman. "Mary" (Tanis Chandler) has disappeared, causing her worried mother (Mary Gordon) and her rather weak-willed future husband, “Jeff” (Bruce Kellogg), considerable distress. Things become more complicated when Charlie realizes that the missing person previously worked with his initial victim. The story becomes layered as they—with occasional help from the timid "Birmingham Brown" (Mantan Moreland)—try to unravel what's happening before Mary is harmed. This installment’s storyline feels somewhat more intricate and developed than in many of these films. I felt that there was perhaps a bit too much reliance on chance events as things unfolded, but I'm certain Charlie would have an insightful saying about the absence of genuine luck! There are minor surprises toward the end, and overall it maintains a good pace throughout its runtime. It’s always pleasant to see “Mrs. Hudson,” the quintessential Holmesian housekeeper, appear in a movie.
