The disappearance of scientist Harper (played by Frank Reicher) from his cluttered laboratory, alongside claims from his butler Roth (Cyril Delevanti) that he’d been killed, prompts Charlie (Sidney Toler) to intervene and assist the sheriff, who is fond of sayings. The house itself is remarkable, featuring advanced technology like electric gates, hidden compartments, and extensive security measures. Just as Charlie begins questioning things, his estranged son Eddie (Edwin Luke) and their familiar associate Birmingham Brown (Mantan Moreland) appear to offer assistance—though they mostly get in the way. Charlie now has to demonstrate his abilities while uncovering Harper’s fate and the reasons behind it, navigating numerous unexpected turns revealed by a collection of elaborate masks. Typically, I've found that Birmingham’s anxious nature significantly contributes to these kinds of stories, but this time he feels underdeveloped; instead, the narrative falters, focusing more on the gadgets, dolls, and generally underwhelming elements than a strong script or well-developed story. Even Toler seems like he might have wanted to skip this one. It's acceptable enough for viewing, but it’s unlikely I’ll recall it fondly.
