It’s striking how a character who seems so dedicated to tradition can end up in surprising locations—like a Rio de Janeiro nightclub! Honestly, if I encountered him somewhere, I would probably make a quick exit because you just have this feeling that someone is about to die. He's accompanied by his second son, "Jimmy" (played by Victor Sen Yung), and the local police officer "Suoto" (Harold Huber) as they pursue the questionable singer "Lola," who he suspects murdered her lover in Hawaii. Hoping to avoid any embarrassment, he plans to track her down to her apartment for an arrest—but something unsettling is happening, and when they arrive, she’s already dead. There's a lot of information to sort through as he attempts to separate the genuine evidence from misleading clues to uncover what really happened. While the father investigates, young "Jimmy" finds himself falling for the maid, "Lili" (Iris Wong)—that is, when he isn’t pointing fingers at practically everyone and offering a continuous string of predictions that are completely absurd. The story incorporates some genuinely entertaining scenes involving hypnotism; a cup of coffee and a specially prepared cigarette reveal information that could lead to a confession—ranging from murder to skipping math class! The Rio setting mainly provides an opportunity for different outfits and a few Spanish accents, otherwise it's pretty conventional—but I did find it enjoyable.
