CrazyJekyll on Mirageman

A truly distinctive and enjoyable film within its category. It’s not one of those movies that's amusing simply because it’s poorly made. There’s a noticeable level of attention to the narrative, alongside an obvious appreciation for both superhero and martial arts stories. The movie experiences some significant shifts in tone, moving from a low-budget, comedic superhero adventure reminiscent of early Raimi films to a more somber story about an older brother taking on a heroic role to confront those who abused his sibling years earlier. Even with these changes, the film remains effective because the underlying themes are carefully integrated and align well with MirageMan’s character development. He feels realistically limited by his resources, and I appreciated seeing him struggle and adapt using what he had available. The filmmakers also avoided trying to expand the scope of the story or aim for greater ambition. They focused on portraying a man who unexpectedly dons a costume and attempts to do good, and how those around him respond as he transitions from someone mocked and dismissed to someone finally earning respect after a final act of courage. A significant factor in the film's success is Marko Zaror’s exceptional performance. Beyond his impressive martial arts skills, he also demonstrates his ability to portray characters believably while wearing a costume, conveying the emotional burden of being the older and more responsible brother during the darker scenes. Ultimately, it's an excellent and entertaining take on the genre, and I am pleased that Espinosa, Zaror, and Ibieta continue to collaborate because their projects are just exceptionally good.
