The story involves murder, blackmail, and assuming someone else's identity, which makes it fairly involved. Tom Powers, played by Johnston, employs private eye Franchot Tone as Bailey to look into his wife’s affairs. The investigation uncovers that she had a questionable history as a dancer who was romantically connected with an actor and also stole $40k from her previous job. She is found dead beneath the Malibu pier, and Tone quickly becomes the main suspect in Lt. Quint's inquiry, portrayed by Robert Barrat. Things progress at a good pace, full of unexpected developments, and the contributions of Janet Blair, Janis Carter, John Ireland, and even a short appearance from Raymond Burr help to maintain the momentum of this drama—with one significant exception: Tone’s performance. He is not convincing; despite being handsome, he lacks any real charm or skill in front of the camera. The film also feels stretched out – trimming roughly twenty minutes wouldn't have harmed the storyline at all. Still, it's worth seeing.
