It's clear they put effort into recreating the feel of postwar Berlin as the victorious nations began dividing up what was left. The narrative centers on Montgomery Clift, playing "Danny," an airman with the US Air Force during the Soviet blockade that cut off all routes into the devastated city. We also meet his friend Paul Douglas ("Kowalski"), and the film tracks their experiences—romances and adventures—during that brief period of isolation. The plot itself isn't particularly strong, and I personally think Clift is more convincing when he’s playing a cowboy than a soldier; he doesn’t quite come across as believable in uniform. Douglas, however, has a much richer history to explore – his experiences as a prisoner of war have shaped his feelings toward the German population (even though he's not entirely immune to temptation). The aerial footage is well done and does provide some entertainment initially, but at nearly two hours, both the story and the characters become stretched thin, giving the impression it was intended more as a piece of propaganda for audiences back home. Those who are fans of Clift’s work will likely find something to appreciate here.
