Claude Rains, playing “Mr. Popinga,” finds out his boss (Herbert Lom) has been manipulating financial records to ruin the company so he can run off to Paris with another woman. After witnessing his employer destroying important documents, a confrontation occurs by a canal that ends badly. Instead of Lom fleeing, it's Rains who goes to Paris, where he encounters the woman in question (Märta Torén), who isn’t very convincing, along with her less-than-pleasant companions—including "Louis" (Ferdy Mayne)—who are after the money he brought from Holland and which he wisely kept hidden. Marius Goring as “Lucas” is also on the scene, already looking into unusual financial dealings that led him first to Lom’s company and then to Rains, who used to work there. The film is pleasant visually; Paris in the early 1950s looked good, and the cinematography highlights this well. However, the story drags its feet, and while Rains does a solid job portraying a quiet man whose perspective shifts due to circumstance—and who discovers he enjoys the lifestyle that wealth provides—he doesn’t get much help from anyone else, with the possible exception of Goring. The film simply moves at a sluggish pace without offering any real resolution...
