Regarding wartime propaganda films, I considered this one among the stronger and frequently amusing examples. It highlights the accomplishments of the 442nd—a regiment composed of Japanese American soldiers led, with some hesitation, by “Grayson” (Van Johnson). Similar to many in the US Army, he questioned their abilities and dedication, and his prejudice toward them and his superior was not always subtle. These soldiers turn out to be a powerful force, and as time passes, their actions in Europe and Asia show they are capable of facing any opponent. It's this realization that “Grayson” slowly reaches as the war continues and losses begin to affect him more deeply than he might have anticipated. The film depicts a struggle against both Nazis and Japanese forces, but it’s also about confronting prejudice and racism within America; although occasionally relying on stereotypes, it effectively demonstrates that these individuals are just as American as those originating from across the Atlantic. It maintains a relatively gentle tone, often through their pet pig or with some rather clever use of codes and frequently used telephones. By the end, there’s no question about the importance of these brave men—many of whom were actual veterans—to the war effort; Johnson also gives a likable performance. The wartime scenes aren't always entirely believable, but I still found it quite enjoyable.
