Darling 2 isn’t connected to last year's Darling, and it turns out to be a fairly bleak horror movie that doesn’t quite manage to impress, even with some solid camera work from Vijay Kartik Kannan and sound design by M Ravi and Arun-Seenu. The story kicks off well enough, showing a young woman experiencing possession by an unidentified entity, which doctors diagnose as schizophrenia. Then the focus shifts to Arvind (Kalaiyarasan) and his group of friends. They’re planning a trip to Valparai to shake things up because a year prior, their friend Ram (Rameez Raja), who has an identical brother named Krishna, died by suicide. While there, they find out that Arvind is now possessed by Ram's spirit, which wants to kill him for a past betrayal that led to Ram being separated from his lover Ayesha (Maya). The biggest issue with Darling 2 is the straightforward way the plot unfolds; we later learn it’s based on actual events. Director Sathish Chandrasekaran seems to have overlooked making the movie enjoyable. It doesn't deliver any real scares or even a few laughs (Ramdas’s one-liners don’t elicit much of a reaction). Even if the goal was to create a horror film without comedic elements, it feels emotionally hollow, despite some weak attempts at emphasizing the importance of their friendship. The motivation behind the ghost(s) seeking revenge on Arvind also lacks emotional weight. It's worth noting that, similar to this week’s other horror release, Hello Naan Pei Pesuren, the spirit possesses a living person simply to be near its lover! Some scenes with the ghost are frightening, but the less important parts (mostly showing the friends just hanging out) aren’t very captivating. The director frequently builds up tension—like in Balaji's first encounter with the ghost—only to resolve it in an anticlimactic way. Eventually, the film feels like a display of sound and lighting that suggests excitement but fails to hold your attention for long.
