This lighthearted drama, filmed at Shepherd's Bush studios—as far from the sea as one could be—features veteran Scottish comedian Will Fyffe in the role of a merchant ship captain whose vessel is torpedoed by German forces near the neutral nation of "Esperanto." The story then unfolds with his not-so-brilliant attempts, along with his crew, to get even with their attackers by stealing one of their ships from the docks. This causes annoyance for the British consul, portrayed by Leslie Banks, who's attempting to locate the origin of covert communications and enlists the attractive fiancée of his daughter (Hugh McDermott) in a bit of nautical deception. While it likely could have benefitted from being shorter—perhaps trimmed by around 20 minutes—and the storyline has some repetitive elements, those who appreciate Fyffe’s brand of humor will find the narrative ultimately satisfying. It's not often shown these days, but if an opportunity arises, it’s worth watching.
