The narrative unfolds as a recollection, presenting an enjoyable tale centered on people living in prehistoric times; surprisingly, Victor Mature seems genuinely comfortable in his role. He portrays “Tumak,” who finds himself banished from his "Rock" group and discovers sanctuary with the more sophisticated "Shell" community, where he establishes a life and weds “Loana” (Carole Landis). His good fortune doesn’t last, as he's forced into exile once again, leading him back to his original tribe along with his new wife. Together they attempt to appease the tribe’s unpleasant leader, Lon Chaney Jr., all while facing a looming volcanic eruption. The lead actor isn’t given much opportunity for extensive lines, and the visual effects are surprisingly effective—featuring numerous dinosaurs (lizards in close shots), wooly mammoths, and enough action sequences to maintain a brisk pace until an energetic ending.
